$20 Saint Gauden

The $20 Saint Gauden gold coin is a United States coin minted for the purpose to be used as currency.  The Saint Gauden coin is one of the most popular sought after gold coins in history.  The United States wanted to expand our trade with the rest of the world.  They didn’t want our paper money, rather gold.  The $20 Liberty gold coin was not as beautiful as most of the other gold coins from around the world at the time.  It wasn’t ornate and had a “Western” look to it.  This limited trade and commerce for the United States.   In 1906 President Roosevelt hired a famous Greek sculptor named Agustus Saint Gauden to create the most beautiful coin in the world.   This was an attempt to expand our trade with Europe and the rest of the world.  Augustus Saint Gaudens created two U.S. minted gold coins. One was a $10 gold coin that had an Indian on the front of the coin (called the obverse). That $10 gold coin was very unpopular.  Opposite of that was the other gold coin which was a $20 denomination.  In 1907 the U.S. mint minted 361,667 $20 gold coins.  In 1908 4.2 million coins were minted.  The United States, Europe, and most of the world fell in love with this coin.  Augustus Saint Gauden died in 1907 from cancer and this gold coin was named after him, the Saint Gauden.

The U.S. minted coin had global flare to it and “wowed” the world with its design.  It was minted from 1907-1933 in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver. Even the modern-day American Eagle, a bullion coin, was designed after the historical Saint Gauden coin.  One can only imagine how popular the coin was back then, as today it is still held in high esteem.   In the 1930’s large quantities of Saint Gaudens were melted down.  Today it is a safe investment from confiscation, supply vs. demand, historical price performance, and its beauty. It is one of the most highly sought after gold coin amongst both investors and collectors alike.
